From the very beginning, Nespresso has always sought the very best green coffee beans. But, Nespresso doesn't stop there.

We have developed a program, together with our partners – the green coffee suppliers, Nestlé experts, and the Rainforest Alliance, a leading NGO dedicated to improving the sustainability of agricultural production – to ensure that the growers around the world who produce such excellent coffee benefit from their commitment to highest quality.

We call this program the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program.
For us sustainable quality is about ensuring farm practices that lead to highest quality beans and economic viability, whilst respecting the environment and contributing to the social well being of farmers and their communities. Farmers who are part of the AAA Program are rewarded not only with higher compensation, but with membership in the Nespresso community, via the offer of a long-term partnership. Indeed, helping the farmers to achieve harvests of distinction is the best way for Nespresso to succeed in its founding mission to deliver only coffees of supreme quality, while at the same time helping to improve the standard of living for farmers and their communities.

Our first phase of AAA-designated projects, in which Nespresso invested in improvements to farms and surrounding communities, has been completed. In North Caldas, Colombia, farmers, with financial support from Nespresso, acquired modern processing equipment, resulting in improvements in the quality of their harvest and in their economic outlook. In the San Ramon region of Costa Rica, 10,000 trees have been planted to shade the many small brooks on which coffee cultivation relies, thus helping to guarantee the farms' water supply and increasing the biodiversity. Prior to the planting, the brooks used to dry up under the scorching summer sun. In the community of
Ixhuatlan de Café in Vera Cruz, Mexico, Nespresso has assisted in building brand new, fully equipped classrooms for students. As a result of our extensive work with our partners, 30 percent of the total green coffee purchased by Nespresso has been sourced from the Program since October 2005. Volluto – one of our most popular Grand Cru varieties – became the very first Nespresso 100 percent AAA Sustainable Quality coffee, independently verified by Rainforest Alliance. It represented a significant milestone in our exhaustive pursuit of sustainable quality.
